The Astrology of 2021 (And The Events of January 6)

As I always say, the planets don’t give a fu er, “hoot”, about how we keep track of time on Earth.

Astrologically, the start of a new week/month/year doesn’t have special significance. It’s the dates of specific planetary configurations that we care about.

Last year, we experienced three crucial astrological events on five specific dates (one reason why it was such a… unique year!):

  • January 12: Saturn-Pluto conjunction
  • April 5: Jupiter-Pluto conjunction (first pass)
  • June 30: Jupiter-Pluto conjunction (second pass)
  • November 12: Jupiter-Pluto conjunction (third pass)
  • December 21: Jupiter-Saturn conjunction.

Astrologically speaking, 2020 ‘started’ on January 12 and ‘ended’ on December 21. That’s almost equivalent to a calendar year. But, some years, we don’t have an important astrological event until April or May. And, that one event may be at play until June or July of the following year. So, a calendar year is not always the most accurate way to track astrological phenomena.

As an earthling, I nevertheless understand the symbolism of beginning a new year. So, in this post I will cover the most significant astrological influences over the next twelve months, and specify who will be most affected by them (if you have your birth chart handy, you’ll want to reference it).

I have divided this post into various sub-sections so you can read it piecemeal (and easily remember where you last left off).

BUT, FIRST… SOME CONTEXT

Context is the centerpiece of astrology. To understand where we are now, we have to understand where we have just been. Astrologically, nothing happens in a vacuum.

On January 12, 2020, Saturn and Pluto met in Capricorn.

As I explained in the months building up to that aspect, we were on our way to “foundational collapse”. That term wasn’t meant in a fatalistic, doomsday way. It was simply a literal translation of the astrology. Saturn is about foundations; Pluto is about collapse. When these two planets meet in a conjunction (as they do roughly every 38 years), that’s the order of the day.

Established paradigms and foundations (Saturn) collapse (Pluto). The status quo (Saturn) is transformed (Pluto). Subconscious (Pluto) fears (Saturn) surface (Pluto) and must be addressed (Saturn).

This conjunction was of particular importance because Saturn and Pluto hadn’t met in Capricorn since 1518. And, Capricorn is the sign that relates to government and business.

Soon, the entire world came to a grinding halt — and some industries had the floor removed from under them — as a result of COVID-19.

As we approached the last six weeks of 2020, it was clear that a slew of changes were in store (see this post for details), including a solar eclipse on December 14 that, from my astrological lens, pointed to Donald J. Trump’s presidency being limited to one term.

The other big-ticket event: a meeting between Jupiter and Saturn on December 21. Although these two planets meet roughly every twenty years, this one was especially significant because it happened at zero degrees (a powerful degree) of Aquarius and kicked off a new 200-year cycle of Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in air signs. This particular conjunction had “big changes” (in neon capital letters) written all over it.

I was not at all surprised that, two weeks after this event, two Democrats won the Georgia Senate runoff elections, flipping the Senate from Republican control to Democratic control (in addition, Jon Ossoff had his Mars return at the time of the election — a period of success and forward movement — while Raphael Warnock had opportunity-laden Jupiter supporting his natal Mars and Jupiter — significantly increasing the chances of the odds being in his favor).

As I explained in my November 4, 2020 blog post:

“Aquarius is progressive, forward-thinking, revolutionary, unpredictable, unexpected. It is also the sign that rules science and technology.

This gives the period between 2020 and 2040 (the next Jupiter-Saturn conjunction takes place in Libra on October 31, 2040) a significant amount of radical, unconventional, innovative, experimental energy.”

I also noted that while this indicated the beginning of a new era, “astrological ‘stress’ is required for growth and evolution. When there is such a significant shift from the energy of one sign to the next (as we shift from a time of extreme Capricorn energy to a significantly more Aquarian energy), there are some initial bumps in the road.”

Which brings us to…

THE EVENTS OF JANUARY 6, 2021

In my previous post, where I discussed the astrological events of the last six weeks of 2020, I mentioned that “Mars has a pending boxing match with Saturn and Pluto. The Mars-Pluto fight takes place from December 17 to December 31. The Mars-Saturn face-off takes place between January 6 and January 27. When Mars squares off against these two heavy hitters, anger and resentment surfaces. Whatever has been festering finally comes to a head so it can be addressed once and for all — head-on.”

The January 6, 2021 breach of the United States Capitol by pro-Trump rioters was an unprecedented event. And, yet, given the current astrological landscape (that puts a magnifying glass over our collective societal shadow so we can finally face it and do something about it), I was not surprised. Not only did this take place during a square (combative aspect) between Mars and Saturn; it was also planned during a square between Mars and Pluto. That’s a lot of mismanaged anger — with extra kerosene, to boot.

There’s another major astrological influence currently at play — the United States’ Pluto return. As I wrote in this June 3, 2020 post, this aspect “is exact on February 21, 2022, but its effects will begin to be felt as early as January 2021.”

The Pluto return (which happens roughly every 244 years, and therefore is the country’s first-ever) requires that we:

  • tear down structures and systems that are rotten at the core and start over;
  • forget band-aid solutions; identify foundational problems and look to foundational solutions;
  • face all the “ugly things” that have been swept under the rug;
  • embrace systemic change.

Pluto — regardless of whether you talk about it in a person’s chart or a country’s chart — represents whatever has been repressed for a long time. It represents our shadow; the unpleasant side(s) of ourselves that we often avoid, or project onto others.

“Shadow work” can really pay off. Consider, for example, the tremendous power and insight that can come from someone accepting that their own deep-seated insecurities about “not being good enough” are at the root of their constant desire to dominate conversations and have the last word (as opposed to less-evolved perspectives like “everyone I meet is so boring,” or “I’m just a say-it-like-it-is kind of person; if other people don’t like it, that’s their problem.”)

Alas, we often hear about what happens after people do “shadow work”. The clarifying “a-ha” moments. The amends they made. Their improved, authentic life. The albatross they took off their shoulders. The success they achieved.

What is often left out of the equation is the experience of doing the shadow work (much like how fairy tales end at a happy climax; we never hear how Prince Charming and his betrothed had a shitty honeymoon where they gave each other the silent treatment for 48 hours).

It’s important to understand that, as a backdrop to the astrology of 2021, we have the very beginnings of the United States’ Pluto return. We will all, collectively, do societal “shadow work”. A lot of unpleasant things will surface.

I’m not sharing this to scare anyone or deflate hopes of “things getting better”. It just so happens that, astrologically, we now have to address a malignant tumor that has been growing for a while. And, in order to excise it, we’ll need to face it and analyze it from various angles. When Pluto comes knocking, hiding isn’t an option. Neither is downplaying its seriousness, using humor as a defense mechanism, or playing dumb until it leaves. Pluto has unfinished business for us to address, and there is no grace period.

What we in the United States witnessed on January 6 was the manifestation of a dark collective unconscious that, for decades, lurked in the shadows. As the country approaches its Pluto return, we will be asked to acknowledge this underbelly.

Remember: the December 21, 2020 Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Aquarius is the bridge to a new era that will be in full swing by the time Pluto enters Aquarius “for good” in 2024 (in 2023, Pluto will dip its toes into Aquarius from March 23 until June 11).

Until then, we will come face-to-face with very ugly truths about who we are as a people. If this journey through Pluto’s psychological caves is handled well, it can help bring long-standing societal shifts that help us evolve. However, this can only be accomplished if we embrace our collective shadow.

That doesn’t mean we have to self-flagellate, go down a shame spiral, or engage in self-hatred. However, it is vital that we recognize the inherent problems in many of our country’s societal foundations, historical institutions, and customs. “People are crazy!” is not an acceptable response during a Pluto return. Pluto wants us to look inward and surrender to the fact that some of the ugliness we see (and will see) is part of our collective identity.

In the wise words of Carl Jung: “knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people.”

To be very clear: that doesn’t mean making excuses for other people’s terrible behavior or engaging in problematic “both sides”-ism. It simply means to resist the initial urge to project negative qualities externally — and to understand that this isn’t “their mess”; it’s “our mess”.

THE MAIN ASTROLOGICAL EVENT OF 2021

While 2020 had three significant astrological events, 2021 has one — a square between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus.

This aspect takes place approximately every 22 years. In 2021, it will be exact at three different times:

  • February 17
  • June 14
  • December 24

Given these two planets’ slow speeds, I will keep an eye on those dates — with a three-week window on either end.

Saturn represents structures, authority, the status quo. Uranus upsets the apple cart, sparks revolution, and wants to march at the beat of its own drum.

While it’s great that we have essentially been given the tools to “build something new”, this year’s astrological landscape has two powerful entities fighting for control of that blueprint: Saturn (representing those who want a return to what they already know) and Uranus (representing those who want to go with a brand new concept).

This aspect encourages us to tackle old habits that have gotten in the way of our progress. It also provides opportunities to cement (Saturn) new and creative solutions (Uranus).

With that said, the main ask of this aspect is to find the sweet spot between Uranus (“blow it all up and start from scratch!”) and Saturn (“don’t change a single thing; we’ve done it this way for the last 100 years!”).

Given the current global landscape, I suspect that as the year goes on, we will see two opposite ends of the spectrum as COVID-19 vaccinations are rolled out. Some nations — or parts of the country — will quickly go back to “the way things were”, while others will be looking to create a new normal. And, at times, these opposing perspectives will clash.

The ask of this aspect, of course, is to determine what can be kept from “the old” and what has to be reinvented. Alas, that process will get a little dirty sometimes.

This aspect also reminds us that change (Uranus) needs a framework (Saturn). One of the pitfalls of tipping the scales toward too much Uranus is simply stating that “the status quo has to go” without first thinking about what would replace it. Too much Uranus is chaotic.

As I always tell my clients in private readings, there is no such thing as a “good planet” or a “bad planet”. It can be very tempting, when discussing Uranus and Saturn, to think of Uranus as the progressive, forward-thinking, freedom-loving planet… and of Saturn as the stodgy, boring, firm authoritarian.

Resist that cognitive trap. They both offer benefits and challenges.

After all, Saturn is the brakes on our cars (imagine driving a car without breaks), traffic lights (imagine driving without traffic lights), and laws. Sure, you can err on the side of too much Saturn and have too many rules and regulations. But, the absence of limits, boundaries, and order is just as problematic.

And, while Uranus represents virtuous traits like egalitarianism, creativity, and revolutions that move society forward, it can also be disruptive and chaotic. Uranus rules, among other things, earthquakes. Too much Uranus is the equivalent of experiencing an 8.0 magnitude earthquake on a weekly basis.

As we begin to build new foundations during this new Aquarian era, we’ll need to embrace change (Uranus) that is sustainable (Saturn) and well-rooted (Saturn).

By the way: Taurus — Uranus’ current home — is associated with the economy. So, in my eyes, this Saturn-Uranus square indicates major economic restructuring as we embrace a new (Uranus) world.  When Uranus entered Taurus on March 6, 2019 (it will be there until April 27, 2026 — except for a brief stint in Gemini from July 8 to November 8 of 2025), I published an Instagram post where I wrote:

“The planet of change, rebellion, technology, invention, and novelty has entered the sign that rules — among other things — finances, values, the earth, and resources.

The last time Uranus was in Taurus (1934 – 1942), we experienced the the worst part, and end, of The Great Depression. It also included the creation of the New Deal, the Social Security Act, and the Banking Act of 1935, which ‘changed the structure and power distribution in the Federal Reserve System.’ You can’t get more Uranus-in-Taurus than that!

No, you don’t need to stockpile food. Life goes on. Society evolves.

Since Taurus rules the earth, it isn’t surprising that the Soil Conservation Act — which called for changes (Uranus’ favorite word!) in plowing techniques — passed during Uranus’ previous sojourn in Taurus.

Expect ecological-focused technology to advance by leaps and bounds during this transit.”

As Saturn squares Uranus, the above-mentioned themes will dominate much of the conversation in 2021. Specifically: how do we redesign a new financial reality?

I expect major volatility in global markets — and especially with cryptocurrency — as this aspect plays out.

PS: Saturn and Uranus will be in an almost-exact square (literally half a minute from being exact)  from October 1 to October 12 of 2022. So, while the squares are only exact in 2021, the effects of this aspect will reverberate through the majority of 2022.

WHY OCTOBER OF 2021 SEEMS SIGNIFICANT

Within a twelve-day period in October of 2021, four planets will end their respective retrogrades:

  • Pluto turns direct on October 6;
  • Saturn turns direct on October 10;
  • Jupiter and Mercury both turn direct on October 18.

This is a lot of concentrated astrological activity. I have found that multiple reversals in direction (especially from retrograde motion to direct motion) align with a flurry of activity and developments.

Additionally, from October 16 to October 28, Mars will be square Pluto. This is always an aspect that brings tensions to a head. Sometimes, this can result in forceful, yet productive, discussion. At its worst, though, it can incite anger and violence.

WHO WILL BE MOST AFFECTED BY PLANETARY MOVEMENTS IN 2021?

When it comes to feeling astrological effects, I only focus on the movement of the slower-moving planets: Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Their slower speeds mean that their effects are felt for a significant period of time (as opposed to the moon, which has an orbital period of 28 days and, if it affects your chart, only does so for roughly eight hours).

If you don’t know where you have your sun, moon, and planets: head to Astrodienst, enter your birth information, and create a free chart. Then, read below to determine if you will be affected by the planets’ movements over the next twelve months.

HELPED BY SATURN

Anyone who has the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle (ascendant/descendant; IC/Midheaven) between 7 and 12 degrees of Aries, Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius.

If this is you, 2021 will help you solidify and crystallize. Even when Saturn is helping, it is still Saturn. In other words — you will be asked to “do the work” and put in significant effort. But, Saturn on your side is a lot like having the best coach training you. You will be put through the paces. But, by the time you are done, you will walk away with a tremendous set of skills.

CHALLENGED BY SATURN

Anyone who has the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle (ascendant/descendant; IC/Midheaven) between 7 and 12 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius.

While I don’t do “doom and gloom” astrology, I also don’t sugarcoat things. Saturn challenges are a doozy. There’s no way around it. As I tell my private clients, a Saturn challenge has a purpose and a lesson. We aren’t challenged because of “bad karma” or for the sake of suffering.

This simply comes down to Saturn’s role in astrology: the auditor. Saturn wants to make sure everything is running smoothly. And, to make sure that’s happening, Saturn stress tests our lives. Whatever is on its last leg will not make it through a Saturn challenge. This can sometimes be difficult because, prior to the Saturn challenge, it’s easier to live in denial (“okay, so maybe this relationship isn’t the healthiest… and I don’t feel listened to… but at least we’re not cheating on each other!”). Once Saturn comes along, anything built on a shaky foundation will crumble.

HELPED BY URANUS

Anyone who has the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle (ascendant/descendant; IC/Midheaven) between 11 and 15 degrees of Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn, Pisces.

When Uranus supports your chart, the winds of change blow quite strongly — and in your favor. It’s important to remember that beneficial aspects from a planet don’t mean we can avoid a given planet’s archetypal energy; rather, it means we have an easier time integrating it. Supportive Uranus transits also make us seek change and reinvention.

CHALLENGED BY URANUS

Anyone who has the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle (ascendant/descendant; IC/Midheaven) between 11 and 15 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius.

When Uranus challenges something in our chart, we learn lessons about detachment and going with the flow. Irrevocable change takes place (often times at the hands of others, and the kind of change we have no say over, but nevertheless has tremendous downstream effects). Challenging Uranus transits become a hundred times more challenging if our response is to fight change and maintain everything as it is.

HELPED BY NEPTUNE

Anyone who has the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle (ascendant/descendant; IC/Midheaven) between 20 and 23 degrees of Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn.

True to form, Neptune is the most subtle of the slower-moving planets. Nevertheless, the effects of supportive transits are felt — mainly as a time of increased inspiration, sensitivity, and compassion. Many people often discover an artistic talent or skill during beneficial Neptune transits, too.

CHALLENGED BY NEPTUNE

Anyone who has the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle (ascendant/descendant; IC/Midheaven) between 20 and 23 degrees of Gemini, Virgo Sagittarius, Pisces.

This is the “buyer beware” transit. When Neptune challenges our chart, we must remember that our perception of reality is temporarily skewed. What looks and sounds fabulous now will look and sound much different when the transit is over. I strongly advise against making major life changes and decisions during a challenging Neptune transit to avoid buyer’s remorse down the line. Challenging Neptune transits are the equivalent of Alice falling down the rabbit hole. The risk of wanting to escape life’s troubles to such a degree that we find ourselves in the midst of an addiction is higher than ever. The best way to navigate a challenging Neptune transit is by ensuring we have things — and people — in our lives that help ground us and provide a realistic perspective of what is taking place. These transits are also often rife with dishonesty and delusion (from others as well as self-inflicted).

HELPED BY PLUTO

Anyone who has the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle (ascendant/descendant; IC/Midheaven) between 24 and 27 degrees of Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio, Pisces.

I refer to beneficial Pluto transits as “power transits”, because these are the transits that can potentially help us uproot our lives, level up, and become our best selves. This is still Pluto we are talking about, so any changes deployed as a result of this transit will be systemic and life-changing. As I often tell clients, Pluto’s idea of change isn’t “let’s change the color of the walls in the bedroom!”; it’s “let’s completely demolish this house and build a new one.” For many people, beneficial Pluto transits allow them to finally heal from unresolved trauma and address baggage that has gotten in the way of their evolution and fulfillment. If you’re willing to go deep and transform, this transit can give you the emotional makeover of your dreams.

CHALLENGED BY PLUTO

Anyone who has the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle (ascendant/descendant; IC/Midheaven) between 24 and 27 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn.

Think of a Pluto challenge as a category 5 hurricane that decimates whatever isn’t strong enough to sustain its power. And, whatever is strong enough will nevertheless be put through the wringer. It’s important to understand that challenging Pluto transits have a purpose: to facilitate regeneration. It can be difficult for (most of) us to recognize when something is over or when a cycle has come to an end. During a challenging Pluto transit, we are faced with that truth. Sure, at first it can be harrowing and a tough pill to swallow. But, Pluto transits are quite long (often times up to two  years) because Pluto then sticks around to supervise the rebuilding process.

===================================

As 2021 goes on, I will — as always — share more details about these transits (and other events, like eclipses) on my Instagram page. So, please follow me there as the conversation continues!

Astrological Check-In: The Last 8 Weeks of 2020

Let’s begin with the obvious. 2020 has been a transformative and turbulent year.

The year kicked off with a conjunction (face-to-face meetup) between Saturn and Pluto in January.

When I initially discussed this aspect (on my Instagram account in April of 2019), I described it as “foundational collapse.” I didn’t mean that in a hyperbolic end-of-times way; it was a literal interpretation of the astrology: Pluto (collapse) conjunct Saturn (foundations).

Here’s the thing: Pluto and Saturn meet up every 38 years. So, we’ve lived through prior Saturn-Pluto conjunctions (and will continue to persevere through future ones). As I always say, astrology consistently demonstrates that life goes on. Sure enough, history books show that we — as a collective global village — have survived extremely challenging planetary configurations.

With that said, Saturn and Pluto hadn’t met in Capricorn since the year 1518. And, with Capricorn as the sign that relates to business, corporations, economics, finance, government, and labor, this was a Saturn-Pluto conjunction on steroids (hence me not flinching with that “foundational collapse” description).

As the year went on, three personal planets (Mercury, Venus, and Mars) retrograded. While Mercury retrogrades three times a year, there are some years in which Venus and Mars never retrograde.

In addition, the stick of dynamite we call Mars — the planet that most loathes its retrograde period — felt emboldened while in its home sign of Aries (where it has been since late June, and will be until January 7 of 2021) and got into all sorts of caustic arguments with other planets.

Those arguments, by the way, are not completely over. More on that later.

The question I most frequently receive in my Instagram DMs is: “when is all this intensity and craziness ending?”

The last two months of the year have a significant amount of astrological activity that will begin to change “the vibe.” And, yes — the intensity we have been feeling since late August is coming to an end.

I’ll explain all that (and more!) in this post. Let’s begin.

NOVEMBER 12: JUPITER AND PLUTO MEET UP FOR ONE LAST TIME

Jupiter and Pluto first met in Capricorn on April 4 of this year. They then parted ways, but Jupiter retrograded and they had a second rendezvous on June 30. They parted ways once more, and now that Jupiter is making its way through the final degrees of Capricorn, they will meet one more time on November 12.

When a planetary aspect occurs three times in a short window of time due to a planet moving forward, then retrograding, and then moving forward again, this is known as a “triple pass.”

This is important for two reasons:

  1. It means the aspect is at play for a longer period. In this case, the Jupiter-Pluto conjunction is in effect for a total of seven months, with the first week of April, the last week of June, and the middle of November being the “peaks.”
  2. Usually, the first pass brings an issue to the surface, the second brings that issue to a crisis point, and the final pass brings a resolution

This particular final pass is especially significant because, during this last Jupiter-Pluto rendezvous on November 12, we have a planetary melee.

  • The moon will be square Pluto and Jupiter, which adds emotional intensity.
  • Mercury will be on its way to oppose Uranus, which adds unpredictability and brings sudden news and developments.
  • Mars will be opposite the moon and Venus, which makes diplomacy and harmony much more challenging

Can you say “boiling point”?

This planetary configuration on the day of the last Jupiter-Pluto conjunction gives me the indication of a “dramatic ending.”

On another note, I attribute the Jupiter-Pluto conjunction as a contributor to the waves of COVID-19. The dates of the exact conjunctions (plus or minus one week) align with a significant uptick in cases. Given the astrological landscape, I expect cases to continue to climb until late November. I don’t expect significant decreases in cases until December 27 — when Jupiter and Pluto are too far away from each other to have much of an influence.

“Fun” Fact: Jupiter and Pluto were conjunct during the second wave of the Spanish Flu (specifically in August and September of 1918). The infamous Philadelphia Liberty Loan parade (which sparked a huge outbreak) took place during a Jupiter-Pluto conjunction.

As a reminder (I mentioned this in my April 21 COVID-19 post): when COVID-19 first began to spread, I received a few panicked messages from Instagram followers who had come across some Facebook astrology pages “predicting” ‘the next’ Black Death (the bubonic plague epidemic that decimated half of Europe’s population) or ‘the next’ Spanish flu (during which 50 million people died, at a time when the global population was 2 billion).

While a Jupiter-Pluto conjunction at the same time that Neptune (the planet that rules viruses) is in Pisces (the sign that rules viruses) certainly increases the likelihood of such events, these three planets are getting along (they are communicating via a benevolent aspect known as a sextile). Things would be a lot different if they were communicating via squares or oppositions.

As a general rule, please consult another source if you ever come across astrological analysis that sounds like a “biblical end of times” narrative. I despise fear-based clickbait. It’s mental junk food. Rant over.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. If we look at these planetary archetypes, we see that Jupiter relates to growth, expansion, knowledge, and beliefs; Pluto rules transformation, power, and purging.

It’s quite interesting that this aspect — taking place in Capricorn — has its final peak ten months after the Saturn-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn. I say “interesting” because, while Pluto is involved in both, Jupiter is the archetypal opposite of Saturn. From where I sit, this indicates some stunning reversals in power, globally, over the next few years.

A LUNAR ECLIPSE AND A SOLAR ECLIPSE

We astrologers pay attention to what we deem “eclipse season” because it is usually a time of significant changes.

A lunar eclipse is, basically, a “full moon to the tenth power”; a solar eclipse is “a new moon to the tenth power.”

If a lunar or solar eclipse falls within a few degrees of your sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or sensitive angles, then it affects you. It opens up a six-month window of unavoidable change. Lunar eclipses tend to close chapters and phase things out; solar eclipses bring fresh beginnings.

We’ll have a lunar eclipse at 8 degrees of Gemini on November 30th as well as a solar eclipse at 23 degrees of Sagittarius on December 14 (as I noted in my 2020 United States election post, the December 14th solar eclipse opposes Donald Trump’s sun and North node in his tenth house of career, which, to me, suggests that his public role as president is phasing out).

November 18, 2020 NOTE: A previous version of this post stated that the November 30th lunar eclipse opposed Donald Trump’s moon. I apologize for any confusion. The original blog post referenced in the above paragraph has always correctly stated that it is the December 14 solar eclipse new moon that opposes Donald Trump’s sun.

These are actually rather calm eclipses. This year, we’ve had regular new moons and full moons that packed a powerful punch (the October 16 new moon was quite tumultuous, and the October 31 full moon was akin to a magnitude eight earthquake).

While we can’t forget that eclipses are harbingers of change, neither of these eclipses are rollercoasters of turmoil. I believe that these eclipses indicate a six-month shift in the landscape that will bring a sense of stability.

DECEMBER 21: JUPITER CONJUNCT SATURN IN AQUARIUS

Oh, right — this is the other huge astrological deal happening in 2020.

Jupiter and Saturn are conjunct (AKA: meet in the same spot) every 18 to 21 years.

Jupiter’s and Saturn’s meeting establishes a sociopolitical and cultural ‘background tone’ for the next 18 to 21 years, usually defined by the sign where the conjunction occurs.

Jupiter and Saturn continuously meet, every twenty years for roughly 200 years, in different signs of the same element (fire, air, earth, water). In other words, we’ve had a two-century-long period during which these two planets only met in Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius (fire signs).

That is important because we are wrapping up two centuries of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions in earth signs. The earth element (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) Jupiter-Saturn conjunction cycle started in 1802 and wraps up on December 21, 2020 when these two planets meet at zero degrees of Aquarius.

We had a “sneak peek” of the air elements cycle in 1980, when Jupiter and Saturn temporarily bucked the earth-sign trend and met in Libra (the next conjunction, in the year 2000, took place in the earth sign of Taurus).

Once we have this conjunction in Aquarius on December 21, Jupiter and Saturn will exclusively meet in air signs for the next two centuries.

It’s not just that Jupiter and Saturn officially kick off an air-cycle era on December 21, 2020. There’s another tidbit that’s very significant: they are meeting at zero degrees of Aquarius. Zero degrees of any sign is considered a “critical degree” — a sensitive point where that sign’s energies are highly concentrated. Aquarius is progressive, forward-thinking, revolutionary, unpredictable, unexpected. It is also the sign that rules science and technology.

This gives the period between 2020 and 2040 (the next Jupiter-Saturn conjunction takes place in Libra on October 31, 2040) a significant amount of radical, unconventional, innovative, experimental energy.

Hopefully, you can now understand why I look at this conjunction as a harbinger of significant transformation and the beginning of a new era. Remember, we are looking at the start of a 200-year era. So, while there is significant, transformative, and revolutionary change ahead (especially once Pluto officially enters Aquarius in 2024), this is not Uranus-style “my entire life changed in 48 hours!” energy.

If I analyze this conjunction in the most literal way, here is what comes out:

  • Belief systems (Jupiter) are expanded (Jupiter) and locked into place (Saturn)
  • New (Jupiter) paradigms (Saturn) are solidified (Saturn)

It’s worth noting that, over the last 200 years (minus 1980 – 2000), the earth sign-based Jupiter-Saturn cycle expanded and solidified things relating to the three earth signs: banking, big government, corporations, finances, powerful empires, security, and surveillance.

This new 200-year cycle we begin on December 21 will focus on, and bring significant shifts in, air sign them: community-building, communication channels and platforms, dissemination of information, relationships (how they are defined and legally recognized), revolutions, scientific advancements, social uprisings, solutions meant to enhance the greater good, and technology.

As I mentioned earlier, 1980-2000 was a preview of the Saturn-Jupiter air cycle.

During this period, personal computers went mainstream. Additionally, the internet ushered in a new era of how we communicated, acquired information, and sought out romantic partners/relationships.

As the internet (air sign) expanded (Jupiter) and became a new paradigm (Saturn) that locked (Saturn) itself into society, it brought up new (Jupiter) issues and concerns that relate to air sign themes: ownership of ideas (who ‘owns’ the internet?), how technology can be mobilized for the greater good, and the democratization of information gatekeepers.

The 1980 Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Libra was the first one in an air sign since the year 1405! But, with it being the anomaly during an earth element cycle, its effects were somewhat mitigated.

I am frequently asked if the upcoming Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Aquarius means we are entering the age of Aquarius. Not necessarily.

In my opinion, the “age of Aquarius” concept is overhyped and misunderstood. Perhaps this is my hyper-logical and rational Virgo moon on overdrive, but I don’t get behind the notion that the entire world is suddenly going to wear flowy white robes as we all “ascend to the fifth dimension” (I still don’t understand what that even means!).

Part of what makes humanity interesting is the wide range of emotions that we experience. I don’t know about you, but I need to feel anger, frustration, and dismay once in a while. It’s how I know that I want to improve, make changes, and be a better me. And, I believe that astrology is meant to help us embrace the light and the dark. I don’t want the entire planet to turn into self-help bobbleheads that spit out trite mantras.

My hyper-grounded Virgo moon aside, the astrology shows that we are moving toward a new era where the concept of “the greater good” is elevated and much more in the spotlight. I think that will really kick into high gear when Pluto makes its way through Aquarius from 2024 to 2044.

Ah, my Virgo moon is claiming more time on the floor to add one more FYI: we are talking about real life here; not panaceas or Candy Land. This new 200-year period will have challenges, of course. In fact, throughout 2021, Saturn and Uranus will square one another (more on that in a future post). Such is life.

But, much like muscles, astrological ‘stress’ is required for growth and evolution. When there is such a significant shift from the energy of one sign to the next (as we shift from a time of extreme Capricorn energy to a significantly more Aquarian energy), there are some initial bumps in the road. But, we are undoubtedly moving into new pastures.

UPDATE ON THE 2020 UNITED STATES PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

As I type this at 8:03 AM (Pacific Time) on November 4, 2020, the United States presidential election has yet to be determined. Some states — like Nevada, where I currently live — have announced they won’t even begin to resume vote counts until November 5.

I am not surprised. As I explained in my October 4th blog post about the United States 2020 presidential election, both presidential candidates had significant aspects that I placed in the “points to a win” column, and significant ones that I placed in the “does not point to a win” column. The astrology did not indicate that either candidate would sweep the electoral college on Election Day or be elected by the kind of landslide that would have one party celebrating before midnight.

Add in the chaos of actual Election Day (Mercury starting out the day in retrograde motion and then stationing direct and changing direction at 12:50 PM Eastern Time; Mercury’s square to Saturn and Pluto; the moon in restless Gemini squared by nebulous Neptune) and it was a recipe for chaos, confusion, and delays.

So, what now? My analysis:

We are on the cusp of several important astrological events.

  • On November 12, we have the final Jupiter-Pluto conjunction;
  • On November 13, the current Mars retrograde ends;
  • On November 14, we begin a new moon cycle in Scorpio (if you’re on Eastern Time, this new moon is on November 15);
  • On November 14, the sun sextiles Jupiter and Pluto;
  • On November 17, Mercury opposes Uranus;
  • On November 19, the Mercury post-retrograde shadow period ends. This is the date on which Mercury (which has been moving forward since November 3) moves past the degree where it began its retrograde).

I will be watching this date range (plus or minus three days) for significant developments. All of these aspects, to me, point to clarity (that Mercury-Uranus opposition on the 17th can bring clarity ‘out of the blue’ or through a sudden decision).

If the results of the election are clarified and confirmed prior to November 9, I will still be watching this window of time (November 9 – November 22) for significant global developments. I could see it bringing important news about COVID-19 treatments or a vaccine.

WHEN DOES ALL THIS INTENSITY DIE DOWN?

As I mentioned earlier, we have collectively been going through it this year — especially since late August. This stretch of road (that is the astrological equivalent of a road full of potholes that is also covered in black ice) has almost reached its end, though.

  • Between November 3rd and November 28, three planets (Mercury, Mars, and Neptune) end their retrogrades.
  • The November 30 – December 14 eclipses point to an energetic shift.
  • The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction on December 21 also points to a new stretch of road.

Those three bullets show how the last seven weeks of the year are much different than the first ten months.

With that said, Mars has a pending boxing match with Saturn and Pluto.

The Mars-Pluto fight takes place from December 17 to December 31.

The Mars-Saturn face-off takes place between January 6 and January 27.

When Mars squares off against these two heavy hitters, anger and resentment surfaces. While that may sound “bad,” these are also aspects during which whatever has festering finally come to a head so it can be addressed once and for all — head-on.

This brew of anxiety, tension, intensity, and anger that has been brewing since late August begins to cool off in early December, but it is at a simmer (not a boil!) until the end of January. Once we get to the first week of February of 2021, it’s removed from the cosmic stove top and allowed to cool.

I’ll address the astrology of 2021 in a future post. For now, let’s get through the rest of this year.

The Astrology of the 2020 United States Presidential Election

A PERSONAL NOTE FROM ME TO YOU

I initially thought this post would be a two-week research and writing project. Alas, it turned out to be a twelve-week research and writing project.

If you’re expecting to skim through this post in 30 seconds while at a stoplight and find out who wins the 2020 US presidential election, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

Analyzing the astrology of a presidential election requires multiple layers of interpretation; in preparation for this post, I analyzed over twenty charts (the complete list is below).

To make it an easier read, I have divided this post into many smaller sub-headings. Reading ease aside, I also don’t expect most people to read this 8,000-word post in one sitting (with sub-headings, you can read it piecemeal and easily remember where you left off).

This has been, hands down, the most time-consuming blog post I’ve shared so far. If you find it interesting or insightful, I would be very appreciative if you shared it with anyone else who you think would appreciate this content.

Here we go.

PART 1: A PREFACE, IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS & DISCLAIMERS

An Exercise in Objectivity

I am often asked if I read my own chart. I technically can. While I am aware of transits, progressions, and solar arcs that affect my chart at any given time, I have my chart read by another astrologer roughly every 18 months.

In the same way that psychotherapists can’t analyze themselves, it is difficult for astrologers to remain objective when studying their own charts. It’s too easy to project your fears, hopes, and anxieties when reading your chart. For that reason, I prefer that someone with no vested interest in my life take a look instead.

If there’s one thing that is highly subjective, it’s politics. We all have an opinion — whether that ranges from staunchly supporting a party or abstaining from voting because “it’s all bullshit; both major political parties are the same.” Even saying “I don’t care about politics” is a subjective opinion. I have yet to meet someone who, when it comes to politics, says “I have no opinion.”

This project was an exercise in objectivity. I am not a computer program spitting out scripted astrological analysis. I am a registered Democrat and I will vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. And, by virtue of being human, it’s only logical that my initial lens would be one that purposefully looks for everything that supports my desired outcome. That, however, is not my role as an astrologer.

In a minute, we’ll look at the 2016 election (there’s an important reason why). Four years ago, almost every astrologer’s analysis of the 2016 election forecast a “landslide win” by Hillary Clinton. At the time, I didn’t bother to do my own astrological analysis on the 2016 election. What these astrologers pointed to as the reasons for their conclusions made sense to me, so I went with it.

Now that I’ve analyzed those charts, I don’t know how anyone concluded a “landslide win” by Hillary Clinton — other than bias. That is, of course, one of the pitfalls of astrology. If we go in with a pre-determined idea of what we want to see, we will find it at any cost. I’ve come across astrology articles and blog posts that will bring obscure asteroids into an astrological analysis to shoehorn one narrative.

For the sake of writing an insightful and informative piece, I tried my best to look at all of these charts as if I had no stake in the final outcome. I don’t know if I was a hundred percent successful, but please know I made a concerted effort.

Are Presidential Elections Fated and Predestined?

I can’t write a blog post on the astrology of a presidential election without addressing this. After all, if candidate “X” is guaranteed a cosmic win, then what’s the point of voting?

As I always say, I grimace at the notion of astrology being reduced to the equivalent of a fortune cookie or a “Zoltan the Great” machine.

Astrology systematically and carefully scrutinizes a plethora of factors to arrive at a well-informed conclusion, in the same way that meteorologists consider temperature, humidity, wind speed, and air pressure to come up with a weather forecast. If a forty percent chance of rain is forecast but it doesn’t end up raining, that doesn’t mean meteorologists “got it all wrong” or “don’t know what they are talking about” — or that meteorology “is a load of BS.” Astrology, like meteorology, also deals with percentages. Sometimes, those percentages are extremely high. Sometimes, they are low but still worth bringing up as an FYI.

As you’ll see when you make your way through this post, both candidates have challenges on the road to the White House as well as certain aspects they can tap into that can help grant them an edge.

What is determined are the themes and issues that will arise during a presidency. This is why your vote matters; it determines who is in the driver’s seat as we collectively navigate the next stretch of road.

The Problem with Forecasting Presidential Elections in the United States

In many countries, votes in a federal election are cast in-person on one day (usually a federal holiday). In that scenario, we can rely on that day’s astrological aspects — and transits to each candidate’s chart — to get a more dialed-in story.

While the United States technically has a nationally recognized election day, tens of millions of citizens can vote several weeks early (here in Nevada, I can cast a vote as early as October 17).

This muddies the waters and brings up important questions. Should the date and time that the first ever vote is cast (which I don’t think anyone knows) be used to create the birth chart of the election? Should we use the day of the national election to cast a birth chart? What about mail-in votes? What about United States citizen who live abroad and mail their vote up to six weeks before the election?

It doesn’t hurt to cast a chart for the official date of the election (that analysis is included in this post), but the presence of so many variables adds a significant handicap.

There is another confounding factor: in the United States, the winner of the popular vote is not always the candidate who becomes president. While winning the popular vote “doesn’t count” like winning the electorate does, it’s still an achievement (so, transits and progressions associated with success in one candidate’s chart may simply point to their victory in the popular vote).

I hope you that helps explain why this isn’t as simple as taking a look at where the planets will be on November 3, 2020 and, after five minutes of analysis, declaring “Oh, CLEARLY candidate ‘X’ is winning!”

What Can Help Guide our Analysis?

Here’s what I looked at to provide the most complete astrological picture.

  • The transits and progressions to to Donald Trump’s chart on November 3
  • The transits and progressions to Michael Pence’s chart on November 3
  • The transits and progressions to Joe Biden’s chart on November 3
  • The transits and progressions to Kamala Harris’ chart on November 3
  • The birth chart for Donald Trump’s official nomination at the Republican National Convention
  • The birth chart for Joe Biden’s official nomination at the Democratic National Convention
  • The synastry between (chart comparison of) Donald Trump and the United States
  • The synastry between (chart comparison of) Joe Biden and the United States
  • The composite chart (“relationship chart”) of Donald Trump and the United States
  • The composite chart (“relationship chart”) of Joe Biden and the United States
  • Transits to the United States chart
  • The birth chart of the federal election
  • The birth chart of the first votes that are cast in New Hampshire on the day of the federal election
  • The 2021 inauguration chart
  • The 2025 inauguration chart (I’ll explain why when we get there)

Before we begin, let’s briefly go back in time.

PART 2: THE 2016 ELECTION

What Was the Astrology of the 2016 Election?

Before we get to this year’s election, let’s take a quick trip back to 2016.

Almost everyone (pollsters, pundits, journalists, political analysts, historians, political scientists, astrologers) predicted Hillary Clinton would win the electoral vote and become the forty-fifth president of the United States.

That didn’t happen.

I decided to look at the 2016 election charts (I hadn’t before) so I could see what was happening astrologically; and, specifically whether Donald Trump’s chances really seemed that bleak.

One crucial forecasting mistake I often see when birth charts are analyzed is solely focusing on astrological transits. While important, they don’t tell the whole tale. It’s also crucial to consider astrological progressions, which tell us about the components operating in the background. The analogy I often use is that if you think of astrological forecasting as a live theater production, the transits are the actors on stage delivering the lines (it’s where the action is), while the progressions represent the music, lighting, scenery, props, costumes, etc. While not the main feature, they provide ambience and a backdrop.

When we consider transits and progressions to Donald Trump’s and Hillary Clinton’s birth charts, the story becomes pretty clear.

Hillary’s chart had three very supportive transits in the fall of 2016 that, at first glance, seem extremely helpful for something like winning a national election:

Transit Pluto trine natal Venus: a once-in-a-lifetime, if ever, transit that massively increases popularity.

Transit Uranus trine natal Saturn: a transit that occurs about two times in our lifetime; here, there can be sudden events (Uranus) that allow us to solidify (Saturn) our status and lay down a revolutionary (Uranus) foundation (Saturn). It would make sense that a country’s first-ever female president would have this transit during a national election.

Transit Saturn trine natal Pluto: During this transit, a significant milestone can be established and cemented.

We can’t only look at transits; progressions are key (at least that is what my two decades of experience analyzing birth charts has repeatedly shown). In fact, I believe progressions can be more influential than transits. In other words: very positive progressions can mitigate challenging transits; similarly, very positive transits are somewhat stifled if they take place during challenging progressions.

Hillary Clinton had two significant progressions at the time of the 2016 national election.

  • Progressed sun square natal Neptune
  • Progressed moon conjunct natal Neptune

Therein lies our answer. The two progressed luminaries — sun and moon — are involved with Neptune. The progressed sun’s square to Neptune is a once-in-a-lifetime progression (which is not universal; some people never have it), while the progressed moon’s conjunction to Neptune happens roughly every 28 and a half years.

These kinds of progressions stir up Neptune’s more negative qualities: confusion, disappointment, disillusionment, denial, and not facing reality.

Remember how Hillary Clinton’s campaign didn’t campaign in certain states because their data determined those were clearly blue districts? Well, in true form when Neptune is involved in progressions with the sun and moon, that data wasn’t accurate and the rose-colored glasses got in the way of reality. To me, these progressions impeded those three auspicious transits from coming to their full potential. Think of it like having a freezer that doesn’t freeze very well. You could make the most delicious frozen dessert, but it won’t set properly in that freezer, so the end result won’t be what it could be.

Donald Trump, by contrast, had very different energies in his transits and progressions in the fall of 2016.

His main transits:

Transit Uranus sextile natal sun: Uranus electrifies and brings unexpected events. Since this is a sextile (a supportive aspect; planets are sixty degrees apart), it usually indicates unexpected events we like or that charge us.

Transit Uranus square natal Saturn: If Saturn is a tower, Uranus is the lightning bolt that breaks it in half. While not an “easy transit”, it brings major unexpected changes one doesn’t see coming (like being a presidential candidate that most people thought wouldn’t make it past the first primary debate and then winning a national election)

Transit Neptune trine natal Mercury: Here, Neptune is involved in a trine (a very supportive aspect; planets are 120 degrees apart). When in a supportive aspect, Neptune embodies inspiration. Mercury embodies how we communicate. This transit (which happens once in a lifetime) essentially infused Trump’s speech and communications (Mercury) with what many people perceived as illuminating and inspiring rhetoric. Neptune-Mercury aspects are often described like “a siren’s song.”

In addition (and this is what almost every astrological analysis I read at the time left out), Trump had two major progressions in the fall of 2016:

Progressed sun conjunct natal ascendant: This is the epitome of a “power transit.” This once-in-a-lifetime (if ever!) progression is one in which we experience heightened popularity and are thrust into the world.

Progressed moon conjunct natal Saturn: This one occurs every 28 and a half years and aligns with added responsibilities and a huge dose of seriousness.

This unique combination of progressions (which, by the way, is extremely rare) literally embodies: “an increase in popularity related to, or that leads to, an increase in responsibilities.”

It is not surprising to me that Hillary won the popular vote; her transits indicated that. To be clear: had I looked at these charts back in 2016, I would not have said “Donald Trump is clearly going to win.” However, my analysis at the time would have been that Donald Trump’s chances weren’t as low as pundits and political experts thought.

PART 3: ASTROLOGICAL TRANSITS AND PROGRESSIONS AFFECTING THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL AND VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES

Donald Trump: Transits and Progressions

There is significant activity in Donald Trump’s chart over the next six weeks that I can best describe as “a mixed bag.”

Let’s begin with the transits:

Transit Pluto opposite natal Saturn: this is a once-in-a-lifetime transit. Saturn represents structures and things that seem solid and secure. Pluto, when in opposition, demolishes them and requires that we build new ones. I would put this transit in the “does not suggest a win” column; to me, it represents that what was once a secure base (Saturn) of votes is no longer a sure thing.

Transit Saturn opposite natal Venus: This transit happens roughly every 29 years; it’s another one I am putting in the “does not suggest a win” column. Venus has to do with popularity. When our Venus is positively aspected by, say, Jupiter, our charisma is through the roof and it’s almost like we can gain admirers without making much effort. When Saturn supports our Venus by transit, we are taken seriously and people hang on to our every word. When Saturn opposes Venus, however, we temporarily lose “the magic touch.”

Transit Saturn trine natal Midheaven: the Midheaven is a very sensitive angle that relates to career, vocation, and public life. Saturn is involved here in a supportive trine, meaning that it solidifies and crystallizes. I place this transit in the “suggests a win” column.

Transit Pluto trine natal Midheaven: Pluto is also trining Donald Trump’s Midheaven. I consider this a “power transit”, and am also putting it in the “suggests a win” column.

Transit-wise, then, Donald Trump has a 50-50 chance.

What about his progressions? There are two to keep an eye on.

Progressed moon square natal Uranus: classic astrology textbooks often refer to this as “a sudden reversal of fortune.” Uranus squares are known for upsets and unexpected events that we aren’t expecting. In 2016, Trump had transiting Uranus sextiling (supporting) his sun — a surprising, but favorable, outcome. Now, his progressed moon is challenging Uranus. I’m going to put this progression under the “does not suggest a win” column because it suggests surprises that are destabilizing.

Progressed Mercury sextile natal Uranus: Ah, and then here we have a progression that suggests a possibility of a surprising turn of events that can result in one’s favor. In a way, this progression and the one right before it potentially cancel each other out. I’m placing this one in the “suggests a win” column.

There’s one more important thing to keep in mind. On December 14, there is a new moon solar eclipse at 23 degrees of Sagittarius that conjuncts Donald Trump’s moon and opposes his sun. This is significant.

As a reminder, solar eclipses are “supercharged” new moons. If an eclipse closely aspects your sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or a sensitive angle, it indicates a significant shift taking place around the date of the eclipse and up until six months after.

Interestingly, this eclipse opposes Trump’s tenth-house sun (the tenth house relates to career, vocation, and the public). I’m going to put this in the “does not suggest a win” column because this eclipse, in my eyes, could put an end to his career as president.

By the way, if Donald Trump were to win this election, I want to point out that from March 2021 to December of 2022, he will have transiting Neptune square his sun and moon. This is an extremely debilitating, confusing, and disorienting transit. When in a square, Neptune dissolves. I would imagine that the first half of a potential second term will make him feel like he has lost control of the ship.

In addition, Donald Trump will have transiting Neptune square his North and South node during that time. This adds to the theme of dissolution, although in this way in regards to his destiny and life path. That is a lot of “‘Neptune pressure” to have in a chart at one time.

Michael Pence: Transits and Progressions

There are two transits and one progression in Michael Pence’s chart worth mentioning, none of which look promising.

Of course, this could all be for naught because a vice-president is very much a “behind the scenes” position. Very few people cast their presidential vote based strictly on who the vice-presidential candidate is. However, since Michael Pence is part of a presidential ticket, I think his chart warrants analysis.

Transit Saturn opposite natal Venus and natal Mars (in December and January): Saturn oppositions bring somber reality checks and, usually, endings. The timing of this, to me, suggests that during those two months Pence may be wrapping up his tenure as vice-president of the United States and closing out that cycle. Now, of course, this could have other manifestations in his personal life — especially since Venus and Mars are personal planets. But, Saturn opposing your Venus and Mars (a transit that happens roughly every 29 years) is never a joyous and effervescent time. I put both of these transits in the “does not suggest a win” column.

Transit Saturn will also square Michael Pence’s natal Neptune in January and February. I think of this transit (which happens roughly every 14 years) as the one that has you crashing down to earth. Neptune can represent living in a fantasy world where there are no consequences. Saturn turns on the lights, pulls out a bullhorn, and says: “party’s over!” This is another one that I am putting in the “does not suggest a win” column.

He also has progressed Venus square natal sun. While squares involving Venus aren’t as problematic as those involving Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto, I still see this as a sign of a wane in popularity. I am also putting this in the “does not suggest a win” column.

Joe Biden: Transits and Progressions

Seven transits affect Joe Biden’s chart on Election Day.

Transit Neptune conjunct natal IC: This transit was already in effect during the Democratic primaries. When Neptune is conjunct an angle, it is neither supporting it nor challenging it; rather, it is infusing its totality to that part of your chart. In true Neptune form, Neptune is hard to decipher. At its best, it’s an inspirational muse. At its worst, it completely dissolves something (think of putting an effervescent vitamin C tab into water).

We saw how this transit played out during the primaries. Almost overnight, Joe Biden became a beacon of hope for the Democratic Party.

I am putting this transit under both “suggests a win” and “does not suggest a win” because it’s too unpredictable. On the one hand, the IC is the soul of your chart. And, Neptune here can infuse you with Neptunian qualities that other people project onto you. You can be seen as a savior. However, I can’t let Neptune’s potential qualities of dissolution and disillusion go by unnoticed. We’ll have to see how this one plays out.

Transit Saturn sextile natal sun: When in a sextile, Saturn is supportive. Here, Biden’s sun (his sense of self, his identity, his astrological core) is boosted by the planet of authority and responsibility. I put this transit in the “suggests a win” column.

Transit Saturn trine natal Venus: Supportive Saturn aspects are significant because they suggest the laying down of a solid foundation that you can then build on. Saturn also rewards past work. This transit suggests a period of time where you are taken more seriously and radiate kind (Venus) authority (Saturn). I put this transit in the “suggests a win” column.

Transit Jupiter sextile natal Mercury: Jupiter, when in a sextile, hints at opportunities, expansion, and new starts. Mercury is our communication. Obviously, if one becomes president of the United States, one’s voice suddenly has a larger impact and is magnified. I put this transit in the “suggests a win” column.

Transit Pluto trine natal Mercury: Another sextile to Mercury — this time involving Pluto. This is the first time in Joe Biden’s life that he has had this transit. Pluto has to do with power, and Mercury is about communication. Considering all the other transits, this could point to him taking helm at the White House. I put this transit in the “suggests a win” column.

Transit Uranus opposite natal Mars: Uranus-Mars oppositions are unpredictable and erratic. This makes me wonder if the Biden-Harris ticket will either win a state they aren’t expected to win or lose a state they are expected to win.

It’s important to note that, on election day, Mercury stops retrograding (more on that later). Mercury comes to a halt at 25 degrees of Libra, which is exactly 90 degrees away from — and therefore “in a square aspect to” — Joe Biden’s Jupiter. One of the things Jupiter rules is luck and success. This has the potential to point to Joe Biden starting out losing the electoral map and then having a moment where things suddenly turn in his favor.

What about Joe Biden’s progressions? There are two.

First, progressed Mercury opposite natal Jupiter. Oppositions involving Jupiter are never “red alerts”, but Jupiter oppositions often point to things being blown out of proportion or exaggerated. Progressed Mercury relates to how we communicate. This could point to Joe Biden’s words being a problem. I put this progression both under “suggests a win” and “does not suggest a win” because while this can be about your communication being expanded, it can also mean that you talk too much.

Then, there’s progressed Midheaven opposite natal Saturn. This is a once-in-a-lifetime progression that involves that sensitive angle relating to career and vocation. Saturn, by opposition, brings challenges and endings. At its best, Saturn opposite the Midheaven represents a time when you take on significant responsibility and have many burdens placed upon you. It can, however, also signify a final nail in the coffin. For that reason, I am also putting this progression under both the “suggests a win” and “does not suggest a win.” This can very well line up with taking on the responsibilities of leading the United States, just as much as it can bring a permanent end to his political career.

Kamala Harris: Transits and Progressions

Much like Michael Pence, Kamala Harris has many challenging aspects at the time of the election. That further adds to the complexity and nuance of this analysis; neither ticket has two candidates with very promising transits and progressions.

Let’s start with Kamala Harris’ transits:

Transit Saturn square natal sun: those of you who were born the last five days of Aries or Libra will relate to this transit, since you’re experiencing it at the moment. You’ve likely felt a significant amount of pressure placed upon you. You likely feel stifled in some way, and you feel like you’re trying to fit twenty-four hours of work into an eight-hour workday. Without a doubt, Kamala Harris is feeling the effects of this transit, which can also deplete your vitality. Saturn brings endings. The question is: does this Saturn transit point to her bid as vice-president of the United States coming to an end or an end to her stint as senator since she will go on to become the country’s first female vice-president? For that reason, I am placing this in the “suggests a win” and “does not suggest a win” column.

Transit Saturn square natal moon: Alas, Saturn squares both of her luminaries. This is another transit that can go both ways. The moon represents our emotions; and, when Saturn squares our moon, we can often face emotional struggles (like, say, accepting defeat in a national election). I am placing this in the “does not suggest a win” column.

Transit Neptune opposite natal Venus: Neptune squares and oppositions always make me raise a red flag.

Kamala Harris has three progressions (by the way, the fact that all four of these candidates have important progressions does not escape me; it is very common to have no significant progressions for three, five, or even ten years in some cases… clearly, all four of these politicians are having a ‘moment’).

First, her progressed sun is conjunct her natal descendant. The descendant (the sensitive angle where the seventh house of relationships begins) is especially significant here because it delineates the beginning of the top-half (more public) part of our chart. To me, this can definitely align with one’s status changing and becoming a more visible public figure on the global state. I’m putting this one in the “suggests a win” column.

Kamala’s progressed sun is also conjunct her natal South Node. When activated by progressions (especially the progressed sun), the nodes point to fated events. Keep in mind that both the South and North node exist on the same axis. So, Kamala’s progressed sun is conjunct the South and, simultaneously, opposite her North node. Her South Node in Sagittarius is triggered, which indicates that during this time she will be asked to assess her South node (the thinking that can be too “big picture” and hold her back) and make efforts to go more toward her North node (in Gemini, which asks that one focus more on day-to-day events). I am putting this in the “suggests a win” column.

Lastly, her progressed moon is trine natal Uranus and natal Pluto, which points to a time that is — and events that are — invigorating, exciting, and self-empowering. I put both of these in the “suggests a win” column.

PART FOUR: THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNITED STATES

In these cases, I think it helps to look at the synastry (chart comparison) and composite chart (‘relationship chart’) of a political leader and the country they preside over — or are in the running to preside over, as it helps us understand what it is this person brings up collectively. I never read this in an astrology textbook and was never taught this by another astrologer; it’s a theory I came up with several years ago when analyzing the charts of public figures. In my experience, it sheds light.

I decided to only look at the synastry of the two presidential candidates.

Donald Trump and the United States: Synastry (Chart Comparison)

Donald Trump’s sun is conjunct the United States’ Mars. In other words, he awakens the country’s collective Mars: anger and aggression. No matter what side of the Donald Trump “spectrum of support” someone falls on, anger is the commonality. People either staunchly dislike him (to the point where it induces anger), or support him because he speaks to the things that anger them.

Donald Trump’s Venus and Saturn both conjunct the United States’ Mercury. In a country’s birth chart, Mercury represents, among other things, what is newsworthy and ‘the talk of the town’. Mercury also rules the press and media. Here, we have two very energies. Venus loves, Saturn limits. This perfectly describes the love-hate relationship Donald Trump has with the media. He has courted them (Venus) for decades and loves (Venus) the attention of the media, and simultaneously has blacklisted (Saturn restricts and limits) certain journalists and news outlets from campaign events.

Lastly, his Neptune squares the United States’ Jupiter. Here, Jupiter blows up (not ‘explodes’, but enlarges) Neptune to twenty times the size. Neptune fantasizes, dreams, and thinks of all sorts of ideas. Alas, Neptune can have a hard time doing something about — or following through — with those grandiose ideas. This aspect shows that the United States provides a platform and multiple opportunities for Donald Trump’s wishful thinking.

Donald Trump and the United States: Composite (Relationship) Chart

In this chart, the moon (emotions) and Mars (anger) are in opposition. One of the purposes of this ‘relationship’ is to bring unresolved feelings to the surface. Donald Trump is a social reflection of the collective. He embodies a very primitive and instinctual (moon) collective sentiment that is steeped in anger and frustration (Mars). Many people don’t like what I am going to say next, but I have to point to the astrology and say what I see. Astrologically, this shows that he has played a pivotal role in United States history: he brought to light what lurked in the shadows for decades. That doesn’t mean you have to “send him love and light” or add him to your gratitude journal. But, astrological analysis requires context. Donald Trump’s presidency did not come out of nowhere.

In this relationship chart, the sun is also quincunx Pluto. This is a classic aspect of a relationship characterized by power struggles and what I can best describe as “heavy shit” (Pluto rules our shadow and the parts of ourselves that we don’t want to see). Remember, this is a chart of the relationship, so both parties are equally affected. As a result of his presidency, many of Donald Trump’s skeletons (Pluto) came to light (the sun) in a way that was unpleasant (quincunx). And, similarly, collective toxicity (Pluto) became visible (sun).

Lastly Saturn is square the sun. Saturn-sun squares in composite charts usually point to a relationship that takes a while to begin. You usually see this in composite charts of people who don’t begin to date until several years after meeting. This makes perfect sense considering that Donald Trump first ran for president in the year 2000 (for the Reform Party of the United States of America). A Saturn-sun square in a composite chart indicates a relationship that requires a significant amount of work (from both parties).

Donald Trump and the United States: Transits Affecting the Composite (Relationship) Chart on Election Day

Transit Mars square composite Mercury: If this transit happened in the composite chart of a relationship between two people, I would call this out as a brief period of irritability and annoyance with one another. I see this as potentially problematic for Donald Trump because it indicates tension, frustration, and trouble with communication.

Transit Pluto and Saturn opposite composite Mars: in a composite chart of two people, Mars represents passion, fire, and momentum. To have composite Mars opposed by the two heavy-hitters is like suddenly engaging the parking brake. This transit also indicates tension, frustration, and blockages.

If anything, these transits show that the United States, collectively, and Donald Trump are going through a rough patch (and, should he win this election, this rough patch is at play for another 16 months).

Joe Biden and the United States: Synastry (Chart Comparison)

The United States’ Mercury is affected in two ways by Joe Biden. Joe Biden’s Jupiter is conjunct the United States’ Mercury, while his sun is trine the United States Mercury. To me, this means that Joe Biden has the potential to bring hope and optimism (Jupiter) to the collective; the fact that his sun is trine the United States Mercury points to his core self “speaking” to people.

Joe Biden’s sun is also sextile the United States’ Pluto. This provides opportunities for Joe Biden to help the country transform and evolve.

His Jupiter is sextile the United States’ Neptune. Both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have a Jupiter-Neptune connection in their synastry with the United States. The difference is that Donald Trump’s is a square (which points to imbalance), whereas Joe Biden’s is easier to integrate. In this case, his Jupiter (sense of optimism and hope) emboldens the collective Neptune (ideals).

His Neptune is square the United States’ Venus. When involved in a square aspect, Neptune has fuzzy boundaries and be confusing because it’s “a little of this”, “a little of that”, but nothing concrete. It makes sense that this is about Joe Biden’s Neptune challenging the United States Venus because Joe Biden has often been described as “ideologically flexible” and a “wishy-washy moderate” (recall that he was open to selecting a Republican as a potential vice-president).

Joe Biden and the United States: Composite (Relationship) Chart

The sun and Mercury are conjunct. This is quite a positive aspect, since it indicates that this ‘relationship’ is one founded on healthy communication.

The moon and Neptune are in opposition. In a composite chart, this aspect points to nebulousness and a lack of clarity. I don’t find it at all surprising that this aspect is in Joe Biden’s and the United States’ relationship chart, considering that it took him three runs — over three decades — to be presidential nominee and that one common criticism of Joe Biden is his confusing (Neptune) stance on domestic (moon) issues that later need additional clarity.

Mars and Pluto are in a trine. This is quite a positive aspect to have in a composite chart. It’s what I call the “moving mountains” aspect. When two people have this, the world they create as a unit is like nothing they could have built individually. Perhaps this holds the potential of Joe Biden driving the country in a positive direction and rebuilding during his presidency?

Venus and Jupiter are in a sextile. While not a major aspect, this is one that denotes warmth and affection between two people. In this case, the entities are Joe Biden and a nation, but I am not surprised that a politician who is well-known for “reaching across the aisle” has this aspect in a composite chart with the country he has served.

Joe Biden and the United States: Transits Affecting the Composite (Relationship) Chart on Election Day

Transit Mars opposite composite Venus: This transit can go either way. On one hand, it can indicate an increase in passion (voters coming out in high numbers to vote for Joe Biden?). But, when Mars is involved in an opposition it also denotes fierce competition (a battle to the end).

Transit Neptune opposite composite sun: Of the five transits affecting Joe Biden’s and the United States’ composite chart on Election Day, this is the most problematic. Neptune, by opposition, dissolves. Often times, a relationship between two people that goes through this transit can see a temporary breakup, a period of disillusionment, or a period where things simply don’t feel very safe and secure.

Transit Neptune trine composite Jupiter: With that said, we have to look at transits holistically. And, this particular Neptune transit helps to balance out the opposition to the sun. When Neptune and Jupiter get along, the main outcomes are hope and optimism. We feel that we can dream again.

Transit Jupiter trine composite sun and composite Mercury: This is another encouraging transit, since the planet of opportunities, expansion, and growth is in a supportive angle to the sun (which, in a composite chart, is the central operating unit of the relationship) and Mercury (communication and media… if Joe Biden wins, he’ll obviously address the nation).

PART FIVE: OFFICIAL NOMINATION DATES

Another lens through which we can examine the astrology of a presidential election in the United States is to cast a chart for the presidential candidates’ official nominations.

Joe Biden’s Nomination at the Democratic National Convention (August 20, 2020)

I was not able to locate the exact time (as in, the exact minute) this happened. Regardless, this year presented a challenge since I don’t know what city to cast the chart for. Joe Biden accepted the nomination in Wilmington, Delaware, but the roll call was directed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Nevertheless, we can still look at a few planetary aspects for the day as a whole and get some clues.

Mars trine sun Since Mars rules competition and drive, having it involved in a trine (positive) aspect with the sun bodes well. It gives this nomination “oomph.”

Neptune was well-aspected that day (it was only involved in sextile and trines). This is important because a “healthy” Neptune reduces debilitating energies.

Mars square Pluto and Saturn: Here we have two problematic aspects (that both presidential candidates had at the time of their announcements, so they are both equally affected). This combination evokes conflict, strife, and battles. It doesn’t surprise me that both presidential candidates in the 2020 election have this in their “official nomination” chart considering that they both have staunch detractors.

Sun quincunx Saturn: This aspect often points to a blind spot (quincunx) in seeing yourself (sun) objectively (Saturn) and recognizing faults or areas for improvement.

Moon trine Saturn and Pluto: Although Saturn and Pluto are square Mars, they have an ‘escape valve’ — this sextile with the moon. This provides laser focus (Saturn) and heightens persuasiveness (Pluto) over the masses (moon).

Donald Trump’s Nomination at the Republican National Convention (August 27, 2020)

As with Joe Biden, I did not cast a “location of birth” for this chart. We’re looking at the general planetary energies on that day.

Mercury trine Uranus: Mercury and Uranus, when in a positive aspect like a trine, point to surprising outcomes that turn out in our favor. Uranus is an electric charge and enhances communications.

Mars square Saturn and Pluto: As mentioned above, this is also in Joe Biden’s official nomination chart. Once again: his combination evokes conflict, strife, and battles. It doesn’t surprise me that both presidential candidates in the 2020 election have this in their “official nomination” chart considering that they both have staunch detractors.

Moon trine sun: This gives very strong purpose, minimizes second-guessing, and adds clarity.

Venus trine Neptune: This aspect gives this chart a sense of idealism and inspiration (Neptune) that can be presented in a way that is palatable (Venus) to many.

PART SIX: THE ASTROLOGY OF ELECTION DAY

I still think it’s worth looking at the chart for federal Election Day. While I don’t use it as a harbinger of who may win, it provides valuable information about the overall energy of the day. And, yikes, we couldn’t have a more chaotic Election Day if we tried.

Mercury stations direct: You are familiar with the concept of Mercury retrograde (when Mercury appears to move backwards from our vantage point). Well, there is another concept where Mercury is at its most chaotic — stationary Mercury.

Stationary Mercury simply means that Mercury is standing still in preparation for changing directions (either from direct to retrograde or from retrograde to direct). Mercury stations direct (meaning it is standing still as it prepares to move in forward-direction) on November 3 at 12:50 PM Eastern Time.

When a planet is stationary, it is at its most unpredictable. And, since Mercury rules electronics (voting!), the mail (voting), and paperwork (voting), I expect there to be a significant amount of confusion and delays with voting.

In case you’re wondering — yes, Mercury was initially retrograde and then stationary direct in the 2000 United States presidential election (in which the state of Florida was initially called for Al Gore, then for George W. Bush, then “too close to call”, and ultimately led to a five-week legal and political battle involving recounts and the Supreme Court).

The astrological landscape is not a carbon copy of the 2000 election. It didn’t help that the moon was in nebulous Pisces on Election Day 2000 — and that Mercury (clarity, thought, communication) was debilitated by a square with Neptune (the ruler of Pisces, which added more confusion). Nevertheless, a stationary Mercury holds chaotic potential.

Moon square Neptune: When Neptune is involved in a square, you can think of fog, mist, optical illusions, and confusion. The moon sets the tone for the day, so the fact that it is disoriented by Neptune adds to the day’s confusion.

Mercury square Saturn and Pluto: Not only is Mercury retrograde *and* stationary direct on November 3 — it is also severely challenged by the two heavy-hitters. Saturn’s square to Mercury indicates delays and long lines at the polls, and Pluto’s square to Mercury heightens the potential for conflict (and even violence). I would not go to the polls looking to debate or start an argument; November 3rd has an explosive quality to it.

Sun opposite Uranus: And here’s the kicker. This is the epitome of an upset. Any time Uranus is involved, expect the unpredictable. We may see one presidential candidate win a state that hasn’t been won by their party in a while. Or we may see some stunning changes in how one particular state votes. Either way, Election Day 2020 will have many surprising moments.

Bonus (and theoretical) Election Day chart: Dixville Notch, NH

With my Virgo moon in overdrive, I decided to add another layer of interpretation and cast a chart for November 3, 2020 at midnight in Dixville Notch, NH. This small town has been allowed to vote at midnight on Election Day since the 1960 presidential election. I couldn’t help but wonder: perhaps this is the official “start” of Election Day?

The same aspects I discuss in the above section still apply to the Dixville Notch chart. But, one thing stood out to me. This chart’s rising sign is 27 degrees of Leo — which is less than a half of a degree from Donald Trump’s Mars. In other words, this particular election chart energizes Donald Trump’s sense of vitality and victory.

PART 7: THE BACKDROP — TRANSITS TO THE UNITED STATES’ CHART

As I explained in a June 3 blog post, the United States’ chart is about to begin deep-rooted transformation (like never before in its history) that wraps up by the end of 2023.

This relates to the United States’ Pluto return, which is exact on February 21, 2022 but will begin to be felt as early as January 2021.

A “Pluto return” is the term used to describe when Pluto returns to the exact place where it was when the United States was ‘born’ in 1776. Pluto is the slowest planet of all; it takes approximately 244 years to return to its original position (for comparison’s sake, Mars takes two years, Jupiter takes 12, and Uranus takes 84).

The United States’ Pluto return has four “peaks” (moments of high intensity):

  • February 2022
  • July 2022
  • December 2022
  • October 2023

After that final peak in October 2023, this begins to dissipate, but it will be in effect until January 2024.

A Pluto return forces a country to:

  • Tear down structures and systems that are rotten at the core and start over.
  • Forget band-aid solutions; identify foundational problems so you can come up with foundational solutions.
  • Face all the “ugly things” that have been swept under the rug.
  • Embrace sweeping and radical change. Pluto asks that something be laid to rest so something else can be born.

Pluto transits — whether you are a person or a country — demand that you shed skin, write a new chapter, and embrace a new identity. They only become problematic and challenging when we try to cling to to the status quo in hopes of avoiding change.

PART EIGHT: INAUGURATION CHARTS

Regardless of who wins, they will have to navigate the astrology of the inauguration chart, which is analyzed to provide clues as to what that 4-year presidency will bring. It’s essentially the “birth” of their presidency.

Since 1937, the presidential inauguration has taken place on January 20 (with a few exceptions: Harry S. Truman in 1945, Dwight Eisenhower in 1957, Lyndon B. Johnson in 1963, and Gerald Ford in 1974). Prior to 1937, almost every president was sworn in on March 4.

All the inaugurations since 1937 (that have taken place on January 20) occurred between 11:56 AM and 12:55 PM Eastern Time. Interestingly, the last five presidents were sworn in just minutes before or after noon.

As a result of this standardization, recent inauguration charts have some commonalities:

  • The sun is always in the first degree of Aquarius;
  • The rising sign is Taurus;
  • The Midheaven is in Capricorn;
  • The sun is always in the tenth house (fitting, considering that the tenth house is the house of leadership and public visibility) and the sun is either in the first degree of Aquarius or the last degree of Capricorn.

Everything else about the chart shifts depending on the year. I was floored when I compared the 2021 inauguration chart with the 2025 inauguration chart because they could not be more different.

Again, in my opinion, the inauguration chart does not provide information about who is sworn in, but rather what that presidency will have to tackle.

The 2021 Inauguration Chart

The 2021 inauguration chart shows a four-year tenure that will have quite the uphill climb.

Pluto — the great transformer — is conjunct the Midheaven (the sensitive angle that delineates where the tenth house of vocation, career, and the public begins).

Whoever is leading the United States at this time will make decisions that will have a long-term impact on the direction of the country. Remember, Pluto has the capacity to create and also destroy. With Pluto so close to a sensitive angle, we are handing whoever is at the helm a tool that has the potential to inflict damage or be used for repairs and rebuilding. Pluto also rules secrets; when it’s this close to the Midheaven (the most visible part of our chart), I get the sense that surprising, explosive, and up-until-now confidential information will be revealed.

Alas, there are three very challenging aspects in this inauguration chart:

Mars square Saturn shows that this upcoming presidential period will face significant blockages and limitations have plenty of blockages and limitations. I always describe this aspect as “Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill, only to have it roll back down and have to start again.” To me, this also indicates ongoing stalemates involving Congress and the Senate.

Uranus square Saturn shows a battle (square) between the status quo (Saturn) and the next wave (Uranus). I believe that, over the next four years, an entire long-standing (Saturn) era of politics will be ushered out and replaced with new faces and new energy (Uranus). This applies to both parties, by the way. Whoever is running the country for the next four years will have to walk a very thin line between an old school and a new school.

Uranus conjunct Mars is an explosive aspect. In presidential inauguration charts, the condition of Mars is analyzed to get a sense of domestic and foreign conflict. Here, Mars’ dynamite sticks are electrified by unpredictable Uranus. Remember that Uranus is also the planet of revolutions, uprisings, and unpredictable energy. Mars, when in opposition, gets riled up and angry very easily. Whoever runs our country over the next four years will preside over a collective society that will increasingly show that it is fed up and demands systemic change. How explosive and disruptive this gets depends, of course, on how our leader handles that energy.

2025 Inauguration Chart

The 2025 inauguration chart, meanwhile, could not be more different.

Remember: the 2025 inauguration takes place after the United States has completed its first-ever Pluto return. It is only fitting, then, that whoever leads the country from 2025 – 2029 embodies and epitomizes the nation’s rebirth.

Take a look at the aspects in that inauguration chart.

Sun conjunct Pluto: This aspect is about rebirth and a brand new beginning. There has never been a presidential inauguration in the United States with this aspect. This indicates that the 2025 – 2029 presidency will play a major role in bringing a permanent end to structures and systems and beginning the transition to new ways (of allocating resources, redefining social institutions, and bringing new life to issues).

Uranus trine sun: This is an aspect the epitomizes innovation and progress. I would expect the United States to experience a technological and creative boom during these four years.

Mars sextile Uranus: This only boosts the Uranus-sun trine. When Mars and Uranus are involved in a harmonious aspect, there is great momentum and forward movement with technology. And, revolutionary (Uranus) ideas move society forward (Mars).

Mars trine Neptune: This is all about inspiration (Neptune) and action (Mars) in relation to social support networks and addressing inequality.

Saturn trine Venus: This is a very helpful aspect to have in an inauguration chart because it fosters cooperation, enhances (trine) financial (Venus) stability (Saturn), and hints at a presidency that isn’t highly divisive. Of course, no president will have a country’s full support, but a Saturn-Venus trine helps to cool down the tempers and anger that have become so prevalent in the political world.

Saturn trine Mercury: If Mercury is seen as the collective voice of a country on the global stage, a trine with Saturn indicates stability, focus, authority, and gravitas.

Moon quincunx Saturn and square Mercury: These are two only challenging aspect in the 2025 inauguration chart. In an inauguration chart, the moon represents the masses or general public. To me, a moon-Saturn quincunx indicates that whoever runs the country from 2025 – 2029 may have a hard time making an emotional connection with a significant portion of the population. The square with Mercury also gives me the sense that this president (while certainly a visionary) may lack charisma and/or simply have a very rational, “all-business, all-the-time” approach.

As much as I don’t like “doom and gloom” astrology, I also despise what I call “rainbows and unicorns” astrology. I do not intend to make the presidency that begins in 2025 seem like a “We Are the World” singalong. However, a lot of the overt anger and combativeness we see today will decrease significantly.

Alas, before we get to 2025, we need to see how the current election pans out. As you can see, Election 2020 promises to have surprises and, from where I sit, the final result is up in the air. Please vote and make your voice heard.

The United States’ Birth Chart Shows A Country In Dire Need of Repair

Think back to a moment in your life when you could no longer escape a hard truth.

One that made you wince just thinking about it, but had been building for a while and continually resurfaced no matter how hard you tried to push it down.

Now, recall the exact moment when that truth could no longer be ignored or obscured. You likely felt angry, confused, deflated, hurt, pained, and shocked. But, perhaps resolute as well.

That’s what the United States is experiencing after the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020.

The current events taking place across the country are no surprise to those of us who regularly monitor the United States’ birth chart.

There are several factors at play that I want to bring you up to speed on:

  • Transit Jupiter conjunct the United States’ Pluto
  • Transit Neptune opposite the United States’ Neptune and square the United States’ Mars
  • Solar arc Jupiter square the United States’ Uranus
  • The United States’ upcoming (but currently building) first-ever Pluto return

TRANSIT JUPITER CONJUNCT THE UNITED STATES’ PLUTO

Of course Pluto is heavily related to current events. Its keywords include:

  • Abuse
  • Crisis
  • Destruction
  • Metaphorical death
  • Our dark side/shadow side
  • Power
  • Rebirth
  • Transformation
  • Trauma
  • Whatever is hidden/beneath the surface

As I explained in an Instagram video a few months ago, Jupiter isn’t just about opportunity, luck, and growth.

Jupiter also acts like a magnifying glass, expanding whatever it touches — with no judgment of what “it” is.

Scroll up and re-read Pluto’s keywords. Now, imagine a temporary magnifying glass making all those concepts a hundred times more visible and obvious. That is the current astrological energy happening in the United States’ chart.

It’s also why covert (Pluto) forms of racism are coming to light (to the mainstream; I am aware that, to many, this is not news).

This graphic brilliantly captures what that looks like — Pluto represents everything  in the “covert white supremacy” grouping (click here for a more readable version):

In the current astrological landscape, everything that has festered in the darkness is coming to light. Pluto demands systemic and profound change. Band-aid solutions are not going to work.

In true Pluto nature, this transformation will initially be cataclysmic, traumatic, and uncomfortable. That doesn’t mean it will be that way eternally or that “there is no way out”. Quite the opposite, actually. Pluto’s message is that the only way out is through.

TRANSIT  NEPTUNE OPPOSITE THE UNITED STATES’ NEPTUNE & SQUARE THE UNITED STATES’ MARS

Neptune represents the subconscious.

At its best, it aids in spiritual enlightenment. At its worst, it is wishy-washy; it stands for nothing and is hard to pin down. Empty promises simply to appease others are the lowest vibration of Neptune.

Neptune, when involved in squares and oppositions (and conjunctions, though that is not the case here), lets us know where — and how — we have been deluding ourselves.

Neptune squares and oppositions are especially challenging because the delusion becomes obvious, but, in true Neptune form, it can be difficult to determine the next step while the transit is at play.

Remember, Neptune rules things like fog and mist. So, Neptune squares and oppositions are a lot like walking through thick fog. We can very easily become disoriented; we know the general direction we need to move in, but we don’t know how, exactly, to get there.

As I always remind my clients, every single astrological event — even the ones that make us uncomfortable and upset — has a purpose. These kinds of Neptune transits aim to help us (as a collective) tap into the highest vibration of Neptune: spiritual enlightenment.

Alas, the road to spiritual enlightenment does not consist of pricey Ayahuasca retreats where, in the span of one weekend, we drink a “magic potion” and then resume our regular lives with a newfound mystical perspective.

Neptune’s role is to help us realize that enlightenment requires empathy and compassion (two Neptune traits). It does so by exposing vulnerabilities that touch — and befuddle — the human spirit. Here’s the rub: many people are unequipped to handle those vulnerabilities. And, rather than absorb them and sit with them, they deny them (denial is a negative Neptunian quality) by blindfolding themselves to reality.

How this particular Neptune opposition plays out will ultimately come down to how many people choose empathy and compassion over denial.

The square from transiting Neptune to the United States’ Mars is, essentially, a cosmic “time-out”. Mars represents action, drive, forward movement, and initiative. Think of Mars as a fiery flame. Now, think of Neptune as a bucket of water. When Neptune square Mars, Mars’ fire is diminished and the usual “go-go-go” energy that was easily within reach is now not as available. As movement slows, one has no choice but to look around and take note of the environment.

Neptune’s role in this — once again — is to give Mars the opportunity to take a break from its usual “bull in a china shop” energy, reevaluate the direction in which it is going, and take inspired (Neptune keyword!) action (Mars keyword!).

Of course, free will is at play here. If one doesn’t choose to take inspired action, then this Neptune-Mars square is experienced as a disorienting and confusing time during which very little is accomplished.

SOLAR ARC JUPITER SQUARE THE UNITED STATES’ URANUS

Solar arcs do not reflect the actual movement of planets; instead, they are theoretical (every planet is moved one degree for every year of life). Over my almost twenty years in astrology, I have seen solar arcs, without fail, align with milestone moments.

Since solar arc theory moves planets at a very slow rate, it is very common to have very long periods (up to twenty or thirty!) without any major solar arc aspects. So, when they happen, we pay attention.

Right now, the United States is the midst of a square from solar arc Jupiter to its natal Uranus. This particular solar arc square has been at play since June of 2019 and is in effect through July of 2021.

Let’s, again, think about the most basic archetypes these two planets represent. Jupiter expands; Uranus revolutionizes. Enough said.

Uranus fun fact: Uranus was extremely active — by transit, not solar arc — when the Voting Rights act of 1965 passed and when the Civil Rights Act of 1968 passed in the United States. During those years, Uranus (progress/revolution) and Pluto (transformation) met in the same part of the sky, directly across from Saturn (the status quo). For what it’s worth, Pluto and Uranus will not meet up again until the year 2104.

The United States last had this solar arc from 1838 to 1840. The astrological landscape looked different at the time, but it’s important to note that, during those two years, famed abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery and began his journey toward becoming a prominent figure.

In fact, his first speech (at the annual convention of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society, which catapulted him into a public figure and speaker) occurred during this solar arc.

Pennsylvania Hall — an abolitionist venue built in Philadelphia by the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society — was burned down by anti-abolitionists just three days after it opened.

Although the burning of Pennsylvania Hall represented bigotry and hatred, historians point to it as a watershed moment that ultimately expanded (Jupiter) the abolitionists’ (Uranus) support as many sympathized with their plight (and finally recognized the opposition they faced).

THE UNITED STATES’ PLUTO RETURN: WHY IT’S A BIG DEAL

Although this doesn’t kick into high hear until 2022, it is such a monumental astrological event that I’ve been talking about it on Astrology with Andy Instagram account since February of 2019.

A Pluto return makes the first Saturn return (the astrological milestone that relates to adulthood and takes place when we are approximately 28.5 years old) look like child’s play.

Since Pluto moves so slowly (it takes roughly 248 years for it to make a full revolution around a birthchart), no human has ever experienced a Pluto return. In fact, very few things have. Remember: everything has a birth chart. Countries, companies, your next family reunion… everything!

Historically, one long-lasting empire many astrologers look to for clues about a Pluto return is the Roman empire — which underwent two Pluto returns. Interestingly, the United States Pluto (at 27 degrees of Capricorn) is exactly opposite the Roman Empire’s Pluto (at 27 degrees of Cancer). The term “karmic connection” comes to mind…

The Roman Empire’s first Pluto return took place between the years 217 AD and 220 AD — a time of significant political turmoil during which a revolving door of various emperors all ended up being executed. Let me make something very clear: that does not mean we can “predict” the death or assassination of a political leader in the present time. Astrology deals with cycles and themes, and the common theme is political turmoil and revolts (which can take on many forms).

In astrology, we do not simply look at event ‘A’ and event ‘B’ and state that event ‘B’ will be an exact carbon copy of event ‘A’ — down to the last detail — simply because they share one astrological puzzle piece.

The Roman Empire’s second Pluto return took place between the years 463 AD and 465 AD. Although the empire (or, really, the Western Roman Empire) did not fall until 476 AD,  this time period marked the beginning of the end. Libius Severus, the Emperor of the Western Roman Empire during this time, was an ineffective and weak puppet manipulated by Flavius Ricimer (who was unable to be emperor due to his German origins).

Severus’ rule severely weakened the Western Roman Empire and essentially kicked off a decade-long descent that led to the fall in 476 AD.

One important thing to keep in mind is that the Roman Empire and the United States have vastly different charts. So, we can not possibly expect the exact same events to happen (just like how we can’t “predict” how you will experience your Saturn return by looking at how one of your parents experienced theirs).

However, we can look at themes. And, one common theme in a Pluto return has to do with chaos and crises that are meant to nudge us towards evolutionary change.

Not only are the Roman Empire’s and the United States’ charts different; we also have to consider where each one was/is energetically (in the same way that someone who hasn’t shrugged off responsibility will have an easier time with their Saturn return, a country that is aware of its problems and is making an effort to change them can undergo a Pluto return as more of a rebirth a permanent ending).

Pluto transits — whether you are a person or a country — demand that you shed skin, write a new chapter, and embrace a new identity. They only become problematic and challenging when we try to cling to to the status quo in hopes of avoiding change.

THE UNITED STATES’ PLUTO RETURN: DATES AND “TO-DOS”

The United States’ Pluto return is exact on February 21, 2022 but effects will begin to be felt as early as January 2021.

To clarify: the current situation relates to the first transit I mentioned in this post: Jupiter conjunct Pluto. Think of Jupiter as the magnifying glass being used to identify what will need to be repaired during the Pluto return.

The United States’ Pluto return has four “peaks” (moments of high intensity):

  • February 2022
  • July 2022
  • December 2022
  • October 2023

After that final peak in October 2023, this return’s energy will begin to dissipate, but it will be in effect until January 2024.

A Pluto return brings up the following:

  • Tear down structures and systems that are rotten at the core and start over.
  • Forget band-aid solutions; identify foundational problems so you can come up with foundational solutions.
  • Face all the “ugly things” that have been swept under the rug.
  • Embrace change.

THE UNITED STATES’ PLUTO RETURN: IN CONTEXT

As I always say, astrology has to be looked at holistically and in context. After all, every planet is located somewhere… and is doing something. The question, then, becomes: what else is happening during the United States’ Pluto return?

Two things stand out to me.

First, Uranus is in Taurus during the entirety of this Pluto return. Taurus relates to finances, material resources, stability, and values; Uranus revolutionizes, disrupts, and democratizes. I think the next four years will bring significant dialogue around — and structural changes to — where financial resources are allocated.

Second, this Pluto return takes place after Saturn and Jupiter meet at 0 degrees of Aquarius on December 21, 2020. This is a very significant aspect I will write an extensive blog post about as we get closer to the date. For now, I’ll simply say that this planetary meeting lays the foundation for significant Aquarius (humanitarian, egalitarian, progressive, revolutionary) energy over the next two decades.

P.S.: AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE DANGERS OF OVERSIMPLIFYING ASTROLOGY

I was recently sent this post that has apparently made the rounds on Instagram (it has been sent to me by a few people, but I don’t know who created it):

The question I was asked: “Is this true?”.

Look, here’s the thing. I know people mean well when they share this type of information. And, while the information isn’t wrong or false, it’s inaccurate.

That post is like saying that “a banana has as much sugar as a candy bar!”. Yes, that is technically true, but that doesn’t mean it’s accurate to conclude that a banana and a candy bar are basically the same thing. Once you consider nutritional nuances, you realize they are two very different foods.

I share this Instagram ‘meme’ because it helps explains why I started this blog. There are a lot of nuances in astrology that simply can not be summed up in an image or a meme (at least not in a way that is accurate); instead, they require a 2,400-plus-word blog post.

If you’ve made it this far, you now understand that the current US situation is the result of a combination of astrological aspects at play.

It is not as simple as “Pluto is in Capricorn” — it’s “transit Jupiter is conjunct the US Pluto and the United States is about to have a Pluto return.” And, Neptune in Pisces has absolutely nothing to do with the fall of Rome (as you’ve now learned).

It’s precisely this type of overly simplistic astrology that resulted in some astrology accounts claiming COVID-19 would result in as many deaths as the Spanish Flu — roughly 50 million — simply because of Neptune’s placement in Pisces.

Bottom line: the United States has begun a period of change like no other in its history. How it plays out depends entirely on who is at the helm and what its citizens accept or defy. Just keep in mind that this is merely the beginning. That is not meant to sound ominous. Rather, it’s a reminder that change and evolution take place over years and decades.

Which side of history do you want to be on when we look back in fifty years?

5 Tips to Get the Most Out of an Astrology Reading

Whether your astrological reading with me is your first or your twentieth, here are five tips to make it a worthwhile and rewarding experience.

1. Take notes of (or record) your reading.

My astrological readings last a minimum of an hour; some are two hours long.

We cover a lot of information (including, but not limited to): the family dynamic you were born into, emotional triggers, psychological blind spots, default thought patterns, advice to help you navigate relationships, and important dates in the future to keep in mind.

There are also things I say that you may not even consciously hear (or may not understand the significance of) until a subsequent listen weeks, or months, later.

If you are an avid note taker, take notes. However, many people find it challenging to take notes while simultaneously hearing someone talk. In that case, I highly encourage you to record your astrological reading.

Skype, Zoom, and Google Hangouts (I can do readings on any of those platforms) offer free recording capabilities. If you choose to do your reading with me over the phone, there are a few apps you can try:

  • Call Recorder Free by Component Studios (iPhone only)
  • Call Recorder by Boldbeast (Android only)
  • IPadio (iPhone only)

Transcribing a reading, or even typing out notes to e-mail clients, is very time-consuming (it can take me as long as the reading itself — sometimes longer).

That’s why I don’t offer written notes as an add-on service; the charge for that would be equivalent to, or more than, the reading you’ve already paid for. And, frankly, I don’t think that’s a good use of your money considering all the free recording tools you can use.

2. Be an active participant.

A dialogue with a client is a much better experience (for both of us) than me delivering a monologue.

The point of an astrology reading is to have a conversation (about you!) using your birth chart as a helpful guide. By all means, ask questions as we go along. And, if I say something that doesn’t resonate or is confusing, tell me right then and there. This is your time and your money, and our time together is supposed to be illuminating and helpful for you.

Some who are new to astrology may expect something akin to a “psychic reading” at a carnival, where you just sit there while someone tells you about your life. Not quite.

While a birth chart provides me with a clear picture of the road that has been traveled by, and lies ahead for, my client, I sometimes need my client to fill in some of the details.

For example: if I see a Pluto-sun opposition in a client’s chart, I know that power, control, and authority are “hot button” issues (nine times out of ten related to a father who was a tyrant and ruled with an iron fist) that can very easily become imbalanced.

However, as is the case with any opposition, the person who has it in their chart tends to identify with one end of that spectrum.

Some people with a Pluto-sun opposition become extremely domineering themselves because that’s the only way they know to command respect and attention (and to make up for the powerlessness they constantly felt as children).

Other people with that same opposition, though, cringe at the thought of power struggles and authority; they want nothing to do with it. Instead, they (subconsciously) attract that energy — aggressive and domineering people continually show up in their lives while they have a hard time asserting themselves.

Either way, a Pluto-sun opposition needs to be consciously balanced. But, I need my client to tell me how they have experienced it so I can provide meaningful and relevant advice.

Some people think it’s best to not say anything during an astrological reading so as to not “give anything away”. The thing is, your birth chart speaks for you. I’ve studied it prior to our reading, and I already have my talking points ready (some of you have seen my papers filled to the brim with chicken scratch!).

Remember, too, that astrological principles are universal. Every astrology textbook will describe a Pluto-sun opposition as a classic sign of someone who either finds themselves consistently playing the role of domineering bulldozer or powerless victim (until they become aware of this dynamic and consciously address it). There are, usually, significant emotional scars from childhood associated with the father (yes, these can be resolved and that relationship can actually become quite close later in life, but childhood is another story).

So, if you have this aspect in your chart and you share an anecdote about the tenuous relationship you had with your intimidating father as a child, you aren’t feeding me information that I will then repeat back at you as if I had come up with it myself. I always explain to my clients why I say something, and I also often encourage them to look up a particular aspect (so they can see that a particular anecdote they shared is the epitome of a particular aspect in their birth chart that we discussed).

3. Be Open to Objective Assessment

As a tool of insight, astrology acknowledges our assets and gifts… as well as our blind spots and areas for improvement.

I value compassion and empathy. I also take my role as an astrologer very seriously, which requires that I truthfully share whatever is evident in the chart. Sometimes, that’s a puffed-up ego (Jupiter square sun), emotional volatility (Uranus square moon), or mismanaged and problematic aggression (Mars conjunct the sun and square Pluto) that needs to be curbed.

This is not done to put anyone down (I have my own challenges in my chart), but rather to cut to the core and provide helpful advice on what you need to master to support your personal evolution. As anyone who has had a reading with me knows, the hour and a half (or more!) flies by. I need to cut to the chase.

If you’re not psychologically ready to look in an emotional and spiritual mirror that leaves nothing to the imagination, I recommend that you hold off on getting an astrological reading.

And, as with any assessment, you will walk away from a reading with many things to think about and suggestions on what to consciously work on and address.

4. Seek Clarity, Not Answers.

I can — and do — provide advice on how to best proceed based on your chart’s coming landscape. However, you have free will. I don’t like to think of myself as — nor do I want to put myself in the role of — an omniscient guru whose orders must be followed.

Please! My Virgo moon highly values self-efficacy!

If I see that Uranus will be challenging your personal planets over the next nine months, I will highly recommend embracing detachment during that time and remaining flexible since things will be changing significantly.

That information should be sufficient to inform your choices.

So, asking me: “I was thinking of moving to the other side of the country in three months; should I do it?” is a moot point. It depends. My hope is that you will apply the newfound knowledge you gained from our reading to help you decide.

Consider these two very different scenarios:

1) If that move comes up unexpectedly as a result of a job offer you get after randomly meeting someone at a dinner party (which is all very Uranian), it would be worth pursuing since it embodies the energy of the Uranus transit currently happening in your chart.

2) If, however, that move is fear-based and about returning to something that feels safe and familiar, you would be going against the very things Uranus is trying to teach you: freedom, independence, and trying new and unfamiliar things.

You are welcomed to book mini “check-in” readings or very focused readings for important events (e.g., launching your new business) so I can help with date selection, but my purpose as an astrologer is to empower you… not to foster co-dependency.

5. Think “Cycles, Lessons, and Themes”.

I don’t do “doom and gloom” astrology. I also don’t wear rose-colored glasses.

So, yes… objectively, a transit of Jupiter trining (120 degrees away from) your sun is a lot more pleasant than Pluto squaring (90 degrees away from) your sun.

However, the Pluto transit is happening for a reason. It has nothing to do with “bad karma”, suffering for the sake of suffering, or you being a helpless puppet on planet Earth that is controlled by a planet tens of thousands of light years away.

Think of planets as renowned professors in certain subjects. When they come around and pay a visit to your sun, moon, sensitive angles, or personal planets (Mercury, Venus, and Mars), you have been enrolled in one of their classes. It’s now time to show up to class, study, and prepare for the occasional pop quiz — and, at the end, a final exam.

The nature of your birth chart indicates just how steep your learning curve will be. If, for instance, you have a lot of Uranus aspects in your birth chart (and/or a lot of planets in Aquarius), a Uranus transit will be easier for you than for someone who has a birth chart loaded with Saturn aspects.

Planetary transits inculcate lessons and themes. Pluto, for example, demands that you face your shadow (often times, so you can finally kiss it goodbye). Do precisely that and you’ll evolve to the next level.

Okay, but what if you don’t grasp Pluto’s lessons? In that case, the transit will feel especially heavy (and Pluto will continue to throw tests your way during its transit).

If you don’t pass the final exam, you aren’t suddenly “cursed” or “forever doomed”. It simply means that, once the transit ends, you’ll still have to grapple with the issues Pluto meant to help you with — but, this time, without Pluto’s assistance. You can do it, but the window of time when you would have had a renowned expert helping you out has come and gone.

If you’d like to book a reading with me, head to my services page! I look forward to working with you and helping you navigate the cosmic landscape.
